When I first started watching the show, I thought the show was awesome. I even tweeted about how the Spanish on the show sounded so beautiful. However, as I continued to watch it, I felt more saddened.
The show is supposed to be historically accurate so imagining how people were actually treated because of their faith, is very hard on me.
This show romanticizes colonization and genocide from the perspective of the Europeans who committed the injustices. It just makes me so angry and sad to think that they monarchs of that period made these decisions without ever respecting or considering that the countries they invaded had people with their own methods of living. It’s absolutely inexcusable and disgusting that they use their faith as a reason to murder families who are just as willing and passionate to fight for the course they believe in.
The sad truth is, this type of behavior still happens today. It is important to watch and read about these events because as it has been demonstrated, history repeats itself. If we are not willing to educate ourselves about the wrongdoings of people in the past, It is very easy to commit the same mistakes as they did. This show is enlightening and devastating, but these stories deserve to be told, at least to respect the families who were tortured. As if to say, we will not pretend that these atrocities did not take place.
In the show, it is evident that the people were driven by greed and the desire to magnify their kingdom at all costs. I simply do not understand how able soldiers were willing to follow the words of a person who was willing to have them killed in honor of their aspirations. And on top of that, they had the audacity so yell, “For Castile! For the Queen and King!” every time they killed and conquered a nation or area that did not belong to them. …Just horrible.
All I can say is if you don’t want to be enraged by the horrible things people did in the past for ambitions and their legacy, then don’t watch this show. If you want to see a show about a woman who was strong yet an enabler of disrespect in her relationship, then watch the show.
I give this show a 3 out of 5 because the history behind it annoys me, but the actors did a fantastic job.
