I’ve finally gotten around to watching Downton Abbey and it is really refreshing to watch a show that it so motivational and positive.
Like many others I heard reference to the show and I decided to take it up after watching Orphan Black. I am very glad that I did. If you follow my blog, then you know that I am currently reading Anna Karenina. Watching the show gives me a bit of an insight into how life may or may not have been in those times. Of course, the book and the show are not necessarily during the same period; however, they are similar in that, they are both about noble families. The show illustrates how that lifestyle may have been like. It also gives a great depiction of how far things have come.
One of the most shocking events of the show was when Mary, a very conservative and snobbish woman, decided to sleep with multiple suitors even though she wasn’t married. She told Anna that though it may seem as if she was being indecorous, she had to know for certain that the man she was marrying was going to be a good friend, lover and husband. She thought it was important to know this about her significant other before marriage, because she didn’t believe in divorce. I was so surprised at her position because it is so agreeable to what I think. It is weird to think that people in those ages dared to be adventurous and reckless in that way, given the lack of protection from unwanted pregnancies and the expectations of society in those times. Ultimately, this new insight into Mary’s character made me love her more.
Additionally, I am very happy for watching this show because it motivated me very much. It further demonstrated the importance of respecting one’s self and perfectly portrayed how women of that time, really did. I was exposed to both sides, when the cute footman (Jimmy) tried to get the cooking assistant to sleep with him, only to get rejected, and also through Mary’s risky actions. This show has proven to me (even more than before) that there is nothing wrong with living a little. Though, there are certain conventions and traditions, they should not affect ones happiness. Everybody should engage in pleasures once in a while. If Mary, Edith, and the other characters of the show can do it, why can’t you?
A reoccurring topic on YouTube, TV and social media is the impression that is left when women decide to explore their sexuality, as they please. As daring as it may seem, there is nothing wrong with doing what you want, as long as you are not hurting yourself or others. Life is too short to be worried about what others think of you, so live a little.
P.S. If you have been wondering why I haven’t posted anything lately, it’s because my laptop broke, so I had to get a new one.
